An Indonesian court has sentenced an army officer to six years in jail for causing serious injuries to several civilian detainees in the northern province of Aceh.

The officer, Major Bayu Najib, was also dismissed from the army.

The case concerns the beating and torture of a number of civilians earlier this month during a military operation to capture a local rebel leader.

Four of those detained died after the beatings.

Another four soldiers are on trial in connection with the case, and the army has said that altogether nearly thirty will face courts martial.
